The White Pelican

A long beak held level, a dark eye fixed on something just beyond the frame, the crest of feathers lifting at the back of the head — this is a bird that knows the patience of water. The white pelican stands in profile, calm and certain, every feather of its neck and shoulder rendered in fine relief. It carries the stillness of a creature that waits, watches, and moves only when it chooses. The gular pouch beneath the beak, the curve of the throat, the textured plumage along the wing — all of it reads as one quiet presence on the wall.

Cut from a single sheet of 2mm low-carbon steel, the entire portrait stays structurally connected — from the pointed tip of the beak to the layered feathers on the shoulder. No welding, no assembly, no separate pieces joined afterward. The laser follows each feather contour with 0.1mm precision, fine enough to preserve the scratchboard texture of the original rendering and the dense detail of the crested head. One continuous piece of metal, engineered to hold its shape across every size.

Mounted on standoff spacers, the panel floats 15mm from the wall. Ambient light slips behind the steel and casts a layered shadow — the pelican's profile doubled, once in metal and once in light. As daylight moves through the room, the shadow shifts and the feather texture deepens, sharper in direct sun, softer and more atmospheric in the evening. It is a living quality that flat prints cannot reach.

Four finishes to suit the room: matte black for the sharpest silhouette against light walls, matte white for coastal and conservatory interiors, raw steel with a clear protective coat for a subtle metallic grain, or corten rust for a warm, weathered patina that deepens naturally over weeks and months. Five sizes from S (45 cm) to XXL (130 cm) on the longer side, each scaled to preserve the original proportions. Weight ranges from approximately 1.5 to 8 kg.
