Bonheur's Horse Fair

Powerful draft horses rear and surge against the grip of their handlers — muscle, motion, and the raw energy of animals barely held in check. Rosa Bonheur painted this scene between 1852 and 1855 after months sketching at the horse market in Paris, and the original hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Here the great procession is reinterpreted as a single continuous piece of laser-cut steel, every straining flank and lifted hoof preserved in metal.

Bonheur was the most celebrated animal painter of her century, working with a precision born of long observation — she obtained official permission to wear trousers so she could study the markets and slaughterhouses up close. The Horse Fair channels the dynamism of the Percheron breed: rippling musculature, manes thrown back, handlers leaning into the reins. Critics compared its energy to the friezes of the Parthenon, and the canvas made her famous across Europe and America.

Cut from a single sheet of 2mm low-carbon steel, every element stays structurally connected — from the arched necks of the rearing horses to the figures of the handlers and the trees lining the background. No welding, no assembly, no separate pieces joined afterward. The panel is powder-coated for lasting protection, or finished in corten steel that develops a natural rust patina without coating — a surface built to endure for decades.

Mounted on standoff spacers, the panel floats 15mm from the wall. Ambient light casts a layered shadow behind the steel, and the herd seems to move as the day turns — sharper in direct light, deeper and more atmospheric at dusk. The galloping mass gains a dimension flat reproductions cannot hold.

Available in five sizes from S (45 cm) to XXL (130 cm) on the longer side, each scaled to preserve the original proportions. Four finishes: matte black for strong contrast, matte white for a softer presence, raw steel with a clear protective coat, and corten rust for a warm weathered patina.
