Raster vs. vector: why a photo cannot be laser-cut directly

Your photo is a grid of pixels — millions of tiny squares, each holding a colour. That grid is what a screen understands. A laser doesn't read colour. It follows a line.

Before your image becomes steel, it has to be translated into a path: a continuous outline the cutting head can trace through a 2mm sheet. That translation is called vectorization. It turns the soft gradients of a photograph into hard, closed shapes — the parts that stay solid and the parts that fall away.

This is where the whole story begins. The panel on your wall is not a printout of your photo. It's a decision about what to keep and what to cut through — and some photos make that decision easy, while others fight it.

Contrast, resolution, and detail density — what makes a source image convert cleanly

Three things decide whether your image survives the journey into steel.

Contrast. The laser needs to know where a shape ends. A silhouette against a bright sky reads instantly. A grey dog on a grey sofa in flat light gives the software nothing to grip. If you can trace the subject with your eye in one second, the vectorization will do the same.

Resolution. A small, blurry phone screenshot loses its edges the moment it's enlarged. We work best from the original file — the full-size photo, not the one compressed by a messaging app. More pixels mean cleaner outlines.

Detail density. Steel has limits. A forest of tiny leaves, a lace veil, a crowd of faces — each fine element must survive as a physical cut. Too much detail packed into a small panel collapses into noise. The clearest results come from images with a strong main subject and room to breathe.

The 'bridge' problem: keeping thin elements structurally connected

Here's the part most people never think about, and it matters more than anything else.

A laser cuts holes. Everything that stays must connect to everything else, or it falls out of the sheet. Imagine cutting the letter O from paper — the centre drops away unless you leave a small tab holding it. In metal art, those tabs are called bridges.

Thin elements — a single whisker, a strand of hair, the thin arm of a wine glass — need a bridge to stay attached. We design these connections so they hold across 25 years without looking like errors. Sometimes they're invisible. Sometimes they become part of the composition. But they are always necessary. A design that floats freely in the middle of nowhere cannot exist in one sheet of steel.

Understanding this helps you picture your finished panel honestly: it's an interpretation in metal, not a perfect trace.

Portraits vs. logos vs. landscapes: which subjects survive vectorization

Different subjects behave very differently once the colour is stripped away.

  • Logos and lettering convert beautifully. They were designed as flat shapes with clean edges — exactly what a laser wants.
  • Silhouettes — a dog mid-leap, a mountain ridge, a couple in profile — are the natural language of cut steel. The silhouette you'd recognise anywhere translates almost without loss.
  • Portraits are the hardest. A human face lives in soft gradients of light, not hard lines. It can be done, and done well, but it becomes a stylised interpretation — closer to an engraving than a photograph.
  • Landscapes depend on their structure. A clear horizon, layered hills, a lone tree — these carry into steel. A busy, textured scene with no dominant shape tends to dissolve.

The question is never "is my photo good?" It's "does my photo have a shape strong enough to survive being cut?"

Checklist: preparing your photo before submitting a custom order

Before you send your image, run through this:

  1. Send the original file, at the largest size you have. Not a screenshot, not a social-media download.
  2. Choose an image with clear contrast between subject and background.
  3. Favour a strong, single subject over a crowded scene.
  4. Make sure the part that matters is in sharp focus.
  5. Think in silhouette: could you recognise the subject from its outline alone?
  6. If it's a portrait, accept that the result will be a stylised interpretation, not a mirror.

You don't need to be a designer. You need one good, honest image with a shape worth keeping. We handle the rest — the vectorization, the bridges, the cutting into 2mm steel that will still be on a wall long after the file is gone.
