The number on your house does one quiet job: it stays. It has to be found in ten winters, and ten more after that. So before you pick a look, understand how each metal behaves where you actually live.

Salt air is the hardest test. On the coast, chloride-laden moisture accelerates corrosion on almost any bare metal. Painted mild steel resists it well as long as the coating stays intact; a chip near the sea becomes a rust spot faster than it would inland. Aluminum shrugs off salt better than most, which is why it is common near water. Corten steel forms its own protective layer, but in constant salt spray that layer can keep shedding rather than stabilising.

Humid, sheltered climates bring a slower problem: moisture that never fully dries. Anything that traps water behind it will corrode from the back. This is why standoff mounting — where the panel floats off the wall on spacers — matters as much as the metal itself. Air moves behind the number, the surface dries, and the sign lasts longer.

Freeze-thaw is about the finish, not the steel. Water finds a hairline gap, freezes, expands, and lifts the coating. A powder-coated 2mm steel panel handles this well because the coating is baked, thick, and flexible. The enemy is standing water at the mounting holes — which, again, standoff mounting solves.

Corten steel: how the protective patina forms and when it stains masonry below

Corten is the metal that rusts on purpose. Its alloy is designed so that the first layer of oxidation seals the surface instead of eating through it. Over months, it moves from bright orange to a deep, settled brown. People choose it because it looks like it has always been there — quiet, warm, architectural.

But be honest about two things. First, that patina takes time and needs wet-and-dry cycles to stabilise; in a permanently damp, shaded spot it may stay actively rusting for longer. Second — and this is the one people forget — corten bleeds. During the first year, rain carries rust runoff downward. On light limestone, render, or pale brick, that leaves orange streaks below the sign.

If you love the corten look, plan for it: mount it where runoff falls onto planting or dark stone, or accept the staining as part of the aged story. On a pale front wall, a powder-coated finish in a warm brown gives you the appearance without the bleed. Powder-coated vs. brushed vs. anodized finishes: lifespan and maintenance trade-offs

The finish is what you touch and what the weather touches first. Three approaches, three honest trade-offs.

Powder-coated steel. Dry pigment is electrostatically applied to 2mm steel, then baked into a hard, even shell. It gives you deep, consistent colour — matte black, warm greys, whites — and the longest low-maintenance life for a painted surface. Maintenance is a wipe with water. Brushed steel. A directional grain that catches light and reads as honest, industrial, unfussy. Anodized aluminum. An electrochemical process thickens aluminum's natural oxide into a hard, integral layer that resists salt and fading exceptionally well. It is the coastal specialist. The trade-off is aesthetic: colours run cooler and more limited than powder coat, and it reads more contemporary than warm.

Decision matrix: matching material to your exposure, budget, and desired aging look

Start with your exposure, then your budget, then the look — in that order. A sign that photographs well but fails in three winters has told you the wrong story.

  • Coastal / heavy salt: aluminum or powder-coated steel with standoff mounting. Avoid bare corten in constant spray.
  • Humid and shaded: powder-coated steel, mounted on standoffs so air moves behind it. Corten may stay actively rusting here.
  • Freeze-thaw / cold winters: powder-coated 2mm steel. Baked, flexible, and forgiving of ice.
  • You want the aged, architectural look: corten — but only where runoff won't stain pale masonry.
  • You want one colour, low upkeep, decades of it: powder-coated steel. This is the default for a reason.
