Gladiators of Pompeii

Swords meet shields on sand while a net-bearer circles his cornered opponent, the tiered crowd pressed shoulder to shoulder above, and Vesuvius smoking on the horizon — the spectacle and the doom held in a single frame. Auguste Lepère engraved this scene in 1884 for a series on Italy, and the original wood engraving is held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Here it becomes a single continuous piece of laser-cut steel.

Lepère was among the great revivers of wood engraving in late 19th-century France, a craftsman who pushed the medium toward painterly density. This arena scene gathers everything the form could carry: the texture of a packed amphitheater, parasols above the stands, the diagonal thrust of tridents and spears, and the volcano that would one day end it all. The detail rewards close looking and reads clearly from across a room.

Cut from a single sheet of 2mm low-carbon steel, every fighter, arch, and spectator stays structurally connected — no welding, no assembly, no separate pieces joined afterward. The laser follows Lepère's dense linework precisely, preserving the crowd as a continuous lattice of figures. The panel is powder-coated for lasting protection, or finished in corten steel that develops its own patina with time.

Mounted on standoff spacers, the panel floats 15mm from the wall. Ambient light passes through the gaps between figures and casts a layered shadow behind the steel — the arena rendered twice, once in metal and once in light. As the sun moves, the crowd seems to shift and the eruption deepens.

Available in four finishes — matte black for the sharpest contrast against light walls, matte white for a quieter presence, raw steel with a clear protective coat for industrial warmth, and corten rust for a weathered patina that suits the ancient subject. Five sizes run from S (45 cm) to XXL (130 cm) on the longer side, scaled to the engraving's proportions. Weight ranges from approximately 1.5 kg to 8 kg.
