The Descent from the Cross

Angels lower the limp body of Christ from the cross, their wings spread wide to bear the weight no human hands should have to carry. Below, the veiled Virgin Mary reaches upward, her grief held in a single gesture, while St. John stands witness at the base. This is sorrow made structural — a Gothic tympanum carried out of cathedral stone and into a single continuous sheet of 2mm steel. Every figure, every fold of cloth, every feather on the angels' wings remains connected as one piece.

The composition follows the language of medieval portal sculpture, where the arch above a doorway carried the weight of an entire theological narrative. Archivolts ring the scene with smaller figures; foliate and floral carving fills the borders the way it would have framed the entrance to a sanctuary. The line-art rendering preserves the intricacy of carved stone — the architecture, the mourners, the central act of lowering — in a form that reads clearly from across a room.

Laser-cut from low-carbon steel in a Polish workshop, the panel holds its detail down to the narrowest tracery of the Gothic frame. The cutting beam follows each contour with 0.1mm precision, so the thin ribs of the arch and the wings of the mourning angels survive as part of the whole. No welding, no assembly — one sheet of steel, engineered to stay structurally connected, wall-ready on arrival.

Mounted on standoff spacers 15mm from the wall, the panel casts a layered shadow behind the steel. The descent appears to deepen as ambient light moves through the day — sharper in direct light, softer and more solemn in the evening. The shadow doubles the architecture, lending the flat cut the depth of a true portal.

Four finishes carry the scene: matte black for the gravity of the subject and the sharpest contrast on light walls, matte white for a quieter presence in a chapel or prayer room, raw steel with a clear protective coat for a weathered devotional tone, or corten rust for a patina that recalls aged bronze and deepens over months.
