Segantini's Bent Pine

A pine leans over a mountain stream, its trunk bent low by years of alpine wind, while clusters of pink blossoms crowd the banks below. Giovanni Segantini painted this scene around 1897, and the original oil hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Here the woodland is reinterpreted as a single continuous piece of laser-cut steel — every needle, every drip of water along the stream preserved in metal.

Segantini spent his final years high in the Swiss Alps, working in the thin clear light of the Engadine valley. He built his canvases from short, divided brushstrokes laid side by side — a technique that let mountain light vibrate across the surface. This pine, rooted and weathered, belongs to that late period: nature observed with patience, painted by a man who lived among the peaks until his death in 1899 at just forty-one.

Cut from a single sheet of 2mm low-carbon steel, every element stays structurally connected — from the textured bark of the trunk to the icicles hanging over the reddish stream and the mossy rocks at its edge. No welding, no assembly, no separate pieces joined afterward. The panel is powder-coated for lasting protection, or finished in corten steel that develops a warm rust patina over weeks and months.

Mounted with standoff spacers, the panel floats 15mm from the wall. Ambient light casts a layered shadow behind the steel — the bent trunk and its foliage drawn twice, once in metal and once in shadow. As light moves through the room, the scene shifts: sharper at midday, softer and deeper in the evening, a quality flat prints cannot hold.

Available in five sizes from S (45 cm) to XXL (130 cm) on the longer side, each scaled to preserve the painting's proportions. Choose matte black for sharp contrast on light walls, matte white for a softer presence, raw steel with a clear coat, or corten rust. Weight ranges from approximately 1.5 kg to 8 kg.
