Not all fireplaces behave the same, and the difference decides everything about where a steel panel can safely live.

Wood-burning fireplaces run the hottest and dirtiest. The air column directly above an open firebox can carry surges well past what you'd expect, and it also carries the most soot. The mantel does real work here — it deflects rising heat outward, away from the wall above it. Above a deep mantel, the wall surface itself stays far cooler than the firebox, but the zone within the first stretch above the opening still sees the most thermal movement.

Gas fireplaces are steadier and cleaner. They produce far less particulate, and the heat is more predictable. Direct-vent and sealed units keep most combustion behind glass, so the wall above them typically stays in a range that steel handles without concern.

Electric fireplaces are the gentlest of all. The flame is an illusion; the heat is a modest convection breeze at most. For a metal panel, an electric unit is effectively a normal wall.

For a wood-burning setting, a powder-coated finish is the sensible choice — it protects the story underneath and lets you keep it looking the way it did on day one.

Patina and weathering (corten-style) finishes are living surfaces by design. They deepen and shift over time — that's the point. Above a gentle heat source they age gracefully, but in a heavy soot zone the particulate can settle into the texture and muddy the tone you fell in love with. Best kept above gas or electric, or set at generous clearance above wood.

  • Above a wood-burning fireplace: mount your panel above a substantial mantel and leave generous clearance between the mantel shelf and the bottom of the piece. The mantel does the shielding; the clearance keeps the panel out of the direct rising column.
  • Above a gas fireplace: follow the manufacturer's stated clearance above the unit, then treat the wall as normal. A modest gap above the mantel is plenty.
  • Above an electric fireplace: hang it as you would anywhere else. Height for viewing, not for heat.

Always defer to your fireplace manufacturer's clearance specifications first — they know their unit. Then position the panel for the eye: centred, at a height where the story reads from where you sit.

Cleaning and re-sealing schedule for pieces in a soot zone

A panel above a fireplace asks for a little rhythm, not a lot of work.

  • Powder-coated pieces: a soft dry cloth every few weeks in the burning season, and a wipe with a barely-damp cloth once or twice a year. That's it. The cured coat does the rest.
  • Patina and weathering finishes: dust gently, dry only. Avoid wet cleaning, which can disturb the surface. Above a soot source, dust more often to stop particulate from settling in.
  • Raw steel with clear coat: dust regularly, and inspect the seal once a year. If the clear coat dulls or thins in a warm spot, a fresh light coat restores the protection.
